Have your say on the proposed future location of specialist cancer services for children

NHS England (London and South East regions) is holding a consultation about very specialist cancer treatment services for children living in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, Kent, Medway, south London, and most of Surrey.

These services are currently provided in partnership between The Royal Marsden in Sutton and St George’s Hospital in Tooting. The consultation will help NHS England decide where they should be in the future.

This animation explains why things need to change.

Factfile

  • About 1,400 children with cancer are under the care of the Principal Treatment Centre at any given time
  • More than 60% of them are from outside London
  • The current centre is provided in partnership between The Royal Marsden in Sutton and St George’s Hospital in Tooting, which are eight miles apart.

NHS England used data from 2019/20 for an in-depth look at the service (a check in 2021/22 showed numbers were still very similar).

In 2019/20:

  • 1,373 children were treated by the current Principal Treatment Centre
  • 536 were admitted for day care or an inpatient stay at The Royal Marsden and/or St George’s Hospital
  • 1,367 had outpatient care at The Royal Marsden and/or St George’s Hospital
  • 84 had intensive care at St George’s Hospital (15 came from The Royal Marsden, others were treated at St George’s or transferred from their local shared care unit)
  • 41 had conventional radiotherapy at The Royal Marsden

Of children who received inpatient care:

  • 113 children from south west London had inpatient care for cancer at the current centre
  • 108 children from Kent and Medway had inpatient care for cancer at the current centre
  • 98 children from Surrey had inpatient care for cancer at the current centre
  • 94 children from south east London had inpatient care for cancer at the current centre
  • 46 children from Brighton and Hove and East Sussex had inpatient care for cancer at the current centre.

Note: The NHS Transformation Partners can supply numbers of visits to the current Principal Treatment Centre for children from your county/borough/unitary authority on request. For example, of children from East Sussex, children most commonly visited the Principal Treatment Centre 11-15 times over the year 2019/20 with a frequency ranging from 1 visit to over 51 visits.
