Shout Out! MSK self-referral service

In West Sussex, the musculoskeletal (MSK) service, known as Sussex MSK Health provide integrated care for muscle, bone and joint conditions.
Shout out: musculoskeletal service

The musculoskeletal (MSK) service aims to improve patient access, experience, and outcomes by coordinating care across primary, community, and secondary care settings. This includes physiotherapy, diagnostics, and surgical treatment, with a focus on personalised care that enables patients to confidently manage their own care.

When and how to use the MSK Service:

Sussex MSK Health advises that you can self-refer if you’ve had a musculoskeletal problem for more than six weeks. If your problem is less than six weeks old, visit their website for self-care advice and guidance. (New Aches & PainsHowever, if you're in severe pain or need urgent treatment, please contact your GP, visit an Urgent Treatment Centre, or go to Accident & Emergency.

Self-referral into the MSK service does exactly what it says - you can refer yourself for any issues related to bones, muscles, joints, nerves, as well as persistent pain or rheumatology conditions, by filling in a short online form. You’ll be asked a few questions to help direct you to the right service.

The form takes around 15 minutes to complete, and the information you provide is key to helping staff support you effectively. Once submitted, you’ll receive an email confirmation. It’s that simple.

James story

James told Healthwatch that he completed the MSK self-referral form. Yes, it was detailed but made the initial conversation more meaningful and helped the staff member to better support him.

James after completing the self-referral form received an email/text inviting him to a MSK event in Horsham. He booked a suitable time slot and attended. He had time with a staff member and the information from the self-referral form made this easier. They also discussed next steps. James’s mobility was checked and appropriate exercises, using resistance bands, were tailored to his needs and ability.

He has another appointment in 6 weeks’ time. This has given him confidence to do the exercises, whilst he awaits his next appointment.

James told us that he did not know what to expect or expected but feels his left leg has improved since attending the appointment. Very much work in progress. Very thankful to Healthwatch for telling him about the easy to complete MSK self-referral.
