Young People and Mental Health as They Become an Adult

Read more about the Integration Index project, and our findings from talking to a group of young people with mental health support needs who are becoming adults.

The Integration Index project was led by Healthwatch England and NHS England to develop a qualitative methodology as part of the Local Integration Index. Eight local Healthwatch piloted this methodology by focussing on particular local groups with experiences of care across several health and care services. This methodology can be used to ensure people’s experiences of integration are used by local systems to track how services are working together locally.

In this report, we share insight from young people with mental health support needs who are becoming adults. We asked them about their experiences of care. People will be asked later in the process if their experiences have improved.

I remember how anxious I was contacting the doctors. I had the idea that I wasn’t ‘feeling sick’, not physically sick. I’m fine – but I don’t feel fine? I don’t need to go to the doctors for feeling sad, as it would be wasting their time for something that wasn’t physical.
